Wow! It was a packed house last Thursday evening for the Cassidy Winter Concert. Congratulations to all members of the Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Choristers, and D.R.U.M. for an amazing concert! And a huge thank you to Ms. Oliver, Mrs. Williams, and Mr. Chamberlain, fearless leaders of these ensembles. AND thank you to all of the Cassidy staff who support our music program and who made the evening possible!

Mr. Shelby invites all interested 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to apply to join Cassidy’s Racing To The Future (STLP) Program for the 2015-2016 school year. This is a small group led by Mr. Shelby that addresses the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) of racing slot cars. Program members will work on building and tweaking the cars to make them go faster, while also engaging in team work and representing Cassidy! To be considered for the program, students must come to every meeting and purchase the necessary materials needed to compete in the racing program. Note that the average cost of a slot car can range from $20 to $40. The group is limited to 6-8 students, and will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis as the applications come in. You can find the application and MUCH more information here!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Target table at Orientation. We have now DOUBLED the number of RedCard holders who have designated Cassidy as their school from 18 to 36! This is great, however…we know there are MANY MORE REDcard holders out there. Not only that, there are even MORE families who shop at Target who could personally benefit from having a Target Debit or Credit card and saving 5% off every purchase – while at the same time, allowing Target to donate 1% of their purchase to Cassidy. This is a FREE way for you to give back to Cassidy if you are a Target shopper! Anyone can designate Cassidy as their school…..parents, grandparents, friends, alumni, neighbors, etc.

Let’s see how we can make this program grow for Cassidy. Since the program was initiated, Cassidy has received more than $9,000 in total funds. Think of the possibilities, if we could make this number grow! Please see below for further info on designating Cassidy, and ask about opening a RedCard the next time you shop Target – or simply open one online!

If you currently have a Target REDcard (Debit or Credit), visit or call 1-800-316-6142 to designate Cassidy (school id: 54118) in the Take Charge of Education program, then simply use your Target card whenever you shop at Target.

If you do not have a Target debit or credit card, you can apply today at or stop in a Target store. Then designate Cassidy using the above instructions.

Please contact Barbara Crandall at with any questions.

Dear Cassidy Families,

It is time for the end-of-year PAPERBACK BOOK EXCHANGE. Your child can exchange paperback books with other students and get some “new” reading material for the summer. Here’s how it works:

  1. Choose paperback books (up to 10) that are in good condition and are appropriate for your child’s reading level. (Students: BE SURE to get your parents’ permission before you bring books to exchange!)
  2. Bring the books to the library before Friday, May 15th.
  3. The EXCHANGE DAY is Thursday, May 21st from 7:30-8:30am. On that morning, students who brought in books may come to the library between 7:30 and 8:30 to choose new books. (Someone will be at the back door to admit you.)

Ms. Adams wants to remind everyone that this is a REALLY fun (and affordable!) way to get summer reading started, so please encourage your child to choose some books for the exchange!

Longer School Days Start April 20th!

Beginning on April 20th, the school day will be extended by 30 minutes until the end of the year to make up snow days. School will start at 8:25 am and be dismissed at 3:45. Bus routes will not changed except that drop off will be 30 minutes later.logo- black on black

Two messages of thanks from Ms. Fister and Cassidy School:

First, you may have noticed new shrubs planted recently around the old entrance to our school (click here for a photo). They were donated and planted thanks to Ken and Lindsay Donworth, parents of Charlotte and Patrick. They look beautiful! Huge thanks to the Donworths for supporting our school in this way.

Second, breakfast and Cassidy School lanyards were provided by our very supportive PTA to all staff for the holidays. We appreciate all you do for the staff here at Cassidy each and every day. Our school is wonderful because of supportive parents like you!

Speaking of the new year…it’s the time of year for exciting winter weather. 🙂 For a refresher on the FCPS winter weather policies and procedures, check out

From Ms Gilpin…

Parents, please be watching THIS WEEK for several pieces of art to come home! We have added “smART Tweets” to the back of our projects so that you can discuss the art projects with your child.  My storage envelopes have reached maximum capacity … together, your children and I have sorted through their projects and they have left one piece with me which might be their potential Art Show piece. (Art Show dates TBA at a later date.)  Enjoy these pieces and think of using them as gifts for the holidays! 🙂

NEW!!! Big prizes for classes bringing in the most Box Tops during our winter contest!

  • The top FIVE classrooms that bring in the most Box Tops by February 27th will win a “Gum & Game” party!
  • For every 150 Box Tops submitted by a class during the winter contest dates, a PJ Day or Stuffed Animal Day or Crazy Sock Day will be earned by that class!

Any non-expired Box Tops submitted since November 1st will count towards these totals. Please remember to put your name and your teacher’s name on your baggies. Questions? Please email: Happy clipping!

A note from Ms. Adams…

Thank you for supporting our Cassidy Book Week by shopping the book fair, joining us for Thanksgiving Lunch, or participating in the various contests. The Joseph-Beth Booksellers Cassidy Book Fair was a HUGE success, and our library receives 25% of all profits from the fair! Funds from the book fair will be used to update our collection of books, bring in a guest author, and purchase software.

It’s here! What your 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have been waiting for…The Recorder Express! Beginning on Monday, December 1, students in these grades will be learning to play the recorder. Here is some helpful info from Ms. Oliver to get ready for the fun:
  • Recommended Brand: Yamaha
  • Soprano Recorders can be purchased at any local music shop: Don Wilson, Willis Music, or Hurst Music
  • Contact Ms. Oliver to borrow a Cassidy-owned recorder
3rd, 4th, and 5th graders should bring their recorders to class each day. Recorders may be stored in the Music Room.

Get Ready for Cassidy School Boosterthon

The Boosterthon Fun Run program is a healthy alternative to traditional product sales that raises much-needed funds for our school and over 1400 other schools across America this year. The nine-day program also promotes FITNESS, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER during the fun-filled experience. PLUS, EVERY STUDENT IS INCLUDED whether he or she participates financially or not.

This year’s character theme is ROCK’N TOWN LIVE, a music festival theme all about COMMUNITY. Students will learn five ways they can make their community rock!

Fitness Focus

Boosterthon supports our ongoing fitness focus at Cassidy Elementary and provides a yearlong fitness video series for our students!

Less Hassle

The Boosterthon pays for ALL costs out of their fee, freeing up our administration, teachers, and volunteers to focus on education. From logistics to cutting edge pledging technology and character resources, their team takes care of all the heavy lifting so we can enjoy the nine-day program. Learn more about their service at

Tons of Resources Included

Our school would have to pay thousands and thousands of extra dollars to receive around 7000 communication pieces, a world-class, interactive character and fitness program, the expert Boosterthon support team, and much more. With Boosterthon, it’s all included.

Did you know most fundraisers allow schools to keep between 40-50%? But Cassidy will receive 51-52% and benefit from a fun, healthy, and easy fundraiser instead of one with exhaustive logistics and planning. Plus, the Boosterthon team pays for the entire cost of the program out of their percentage.

Giveback Every year Booster helps others in the U.S. and around the world by creating a giveback level in their program. Visit to learn about how our school is part of giving back.
