3rd annual Special Needs Awareness Week April 14th-17th!

Dear Cassidy Families and Friends,

Our 3rd annual Special Needs Awareness Week (“SNAW”) is approaching on April 14th-17th!

As a reminder, SNAW will be a week long event during the school-day, designed to increase awareness of both physical and “hidden” disabilities increasingly encountered by our students in the Cassidy community and in the greater Lexington community (we now have rates of approx. 1 in 50 kids being diagnosed with developmental disabilities, among others). Our goal is to facilitate interactive and didactic activities to educate and highlight our special needs, as well as instill a positive and empowered attitude towards inclusion and acceptance.

Our theme for this year, as decided by last year’s Art contest winner, 5th grader Jada Turley, is: “Many Leaves, But on One Tree!”

One of the highlights of the week is our interactive simulation stations facilitated throughout the school day in the gym. They will fulfill the “hands-on” piece of our theme and are designed to cover the more physical components and challenges of life with a disability, some of the sensory issues that typical kids find hard to understand, as well as the communication issues and challenges.  We will also have components of teaching integrated into other Special Classes, including Art, Music, Science, Guidance and Media/Library,

We will hold a kick-off Assembly on Tuesday April 14th at 1:30 pm, in the school gym.  There will be ??? guest speakers from the community: a ……….. and a surprise UK athlete who has a hidden disability (pending the outcome of the current athletics season which will determine availability!).  They will  each try to give the students a sense of what life is like for them and what others need to know to relate better to individuals who may have the same or similar disabilities.

You are welcome to drop by the assembly, and to help facilitate some of the interactive “Simulation Stations” which will be held through the remainder of the week.  If you would like to help out, please sign-up using the following link:

We have many local professionals, parents and friends of Cassidy helping to make this event a success – all with positive messages for our kids and community!
Please contact Dr. Kim Thompson ( for any further information.
Thank you so much for your support!
Your Cassidy PTA SNAW Committee
