Dear Cassidy Families and Friends,
It is almost time for our 4th annual Special Needs Awareness Week at Cassidy! This year we are calling it SNAP (We are substituting the word “program” for “week”) and it will take place the week of April 11th to April 15th!
As you may recall, this will be a week long event during the school-day, designed to increase awareness of both physical and “hidden” disabilities increasingly encountered by our students in the Cassidy and greater Lexington community. Our goal is to facilitate interactive and didactic activities to educate and highlight our special needs, as well as instill a positive and empowered attitude towards inclusion and acceptance.
Our theme for this year, as decided by last year’s Art contest winner, Caroline O’Donnell, is: “Sky’s The Limit!”
One of the highlights of the week is our interactive simulation stations facilitated throughout the school day in the gym. These stations fulfill the “hands-on” piece of our theme better than any instructional sessions that we will be doing during other class periods and are designed to cover the more physical components and challenges of life with a disability, some of the sensory issues that typical kids find hard to understand, as well as some of the communication issues and challenges. We have changed the stations this year to provide some fresh experiences for those kids who have been through them a few times now! These new stations will address ADLs, Academics and Athletics/Social Skills, with multiple disability experiences within each one. We will also have components of teaching integrated into other Special Classes, including Art, Music, Science, Guidance and Media/Library,
Our daily themes will be:
Mon (4/11): Intro Day: Afternoon kick-off assembly
Tues (4/12): Disabilities of the sensory systems: including Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Blind
Wed (4/13): Hidden Disabilities: including Autism, ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, LD, etc.
Thurs (4/14): Motor Disabilities: including CP, Downs, Paraplegias, etc.
Fri (4/15): Medical Special Needs: including Diabetes, Epilepsy, Severe Food Allergies, Tourette’s, etc.
We will hold a kick-off Assembly on Monday April 11th at 1:30 pm, in the school gym. There will be several guest speakers from the community, including Ms. Kentucky who has a hidden disability! They will each try to give the students a sense of what life is like for them and what others need to know to relate better to individuals who may have the same or similar disabilities.
You are welcome to drop by the assembly, and we are also ASKING FOR YOUR HELP to facilitate some of the interactive “Simulation Stations” which will be held through the remainder of the week. We have many local professionals, parents and friends of Cassidy helping to make this event a success – all with positive messages for our kids and community – we hope you can spare a little time to join in on the effort and the learning!

Thank you so much for your support!
